Devikulam

Devikulam India has been named after a lake; the word Devikulam means a lake or a pond of the Devi, the Devi referred being Goddess Sita. Legend has it that Goddess Sita once bathed in the waters of this lake. The lake water is believed to have great healing power. It also supports trout fishes which makes angling a great amusement here. The weather remains pleasant through out the year.

The Sita Devi Lake offers rejuvenating springs of mineral water and is also a favourite picnic spot among tourists. Besides the expansive tea plantations, a spice garden run by the district tourism promotion council nurtures a wide variety of spices.

The idyllic hill station with its velvet lawns, exotic flora and fauna and the cool mountain air offers a rare experience to visitors. The Sita Devi Lake is an ideal place for trout fishing.

PLACES AROUND DEVIKULAM

Sita Devi Lake - The mineral water lake that spurts its water over the rolling hills is a wonderful picnic spot. The lake has been named after Goddess Sita and is believed to have curative powers. The lake forms one of the many sacred sites for Hindu pilgrims, in Kerala.

Tea Plantations - The tree plantations that are spread in and around Devikulam further define the beauty and that too in its own terms. The tea estates is a common feature of the hills of Devikulam.

Chinar Wildlife Sanctuary - the wildlife sanctuary, although some 50 kms from Devikulam is a good place and worth a drive from Devikulam.

Munnar - Scenically beautiful, a haven of peace and tranquility Munnar is one of the most popular hill resort towns in Kerala. It is located on the Western Ghats in Idukki district at a distance of 16 km from Munnar. The name Munnar referred to the strategic location of the town at the confluence of Muthirappuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly Rivers. It is the place which the visitors love to visit.

Kuthumkal Waterfalls - Situated in the Munnar district the Kuthumkal waterfalls is one of the prime attractions of Munnar that attract thousands of tourists every year. The misty waterfalls provide a breathtaking view of water cascading down from the scintillating heights.

Kumily - Kumily is the junction town in the Cardamon hills near Thekkady and the Periyar Tiger reserve. Due to its close vicinity to the Periyar tiger reserve and Thekkady Lake Kumily is a busy town throughout the year.

Observatory Hills - This is a beautiful hill located at Nedumkandam at Munnar and is among the prime attractions of Kerala.

CLIMATE

Summers are quite pleasant staying from March till May, with temperature ranging from 8°C to 16°C. On the other hand, June to September experiences medium to heavy rainfall making the air feel cooler. December to February experiences 0°C to 10°C, where January is the coolest month of the year.

HOW TO REACH THERE

Air: Kochi International Airport is best to reach the village is flight is the preferred way of journey.

Rail: Kottayam and Kochi 130 Km and 150 Km respectively are the nearest railway stations from where taxis or buses could be taken to reach Devikulam.

Road: Journey on roads from Cochin (Kochi) and Kottayam is a delight especially when the driver is experienced and efficient for the hill driving.
